Why do we partner with horses?

Horses are prey animals sensitive to nonverbal communication and naturally live in the present moment. They read body language to provide immediate feedback, are unconditionally accepting and invite a connection to the natural world. Horses provide clients with a safe place in which to explore challenges, help our clients to feel accepted and infuse FUN into the process!

What happens at these sessions?

Clients are guided in present moment awareness exercises, grooming and other attachment-based activities with horses. No horse experience is required. All activities are non-mounted, meaning there is no riding horses during our sessions.

Equine Facilitated Learning (EFL)

For clients who want to build life skills, facilitating life skills and healthy attachment through positively reinforced interactions with horses. EFL facilitators do not focus on mental health conditions as part of the sessions (even if they have mental health training). Other professionals such as life coaches, teachers, health care providers who are not trained in mental health and yoga instructors also offer this kind of assistance. This intervention is also called Equine Assisted Learning (EAL).

Equine Facilitated Mental Health (EFMH)

For those clients with mental health diagnoses where treatment goals may include reducing depression, anxiety and self-destructive behaviors or processing adverse experiences related to trauma. This is also called Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP), Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy (EFP) or Equine Assisted Therapy (EAT). These interventions are only offered by qualified Mental Health Professionals operating within their professional scope of practice and who are also trained in Equine Facilitated mental health interventions.

We do not offer other kinds of equine-assisted intervention such as therapeutic riding, nor do we offer riding and/or horsemanship classes found at an equestrian teaching facility.
